An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of the toddler’s death, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. It is the relationship the child had with the police lieutenant.

“The initial investigation into the death of a two-year-old in Winthrop today indicates no signs of foul play or physical trauma,” the prosecutor said on Friday, Jan. 26.

Winthrop Police Lieutenant James Feeley, who has been with the department for 21 years, appeared in East Boston BMC on child rape and other related charges, the DA said on Dec. 27.

The alleged assaults happened over the past year. State police arrested Feeley on Dec. 26.

He was being held on $200,000 bail and was set to return to court on Jan. 29 for a probable cause hearing.

Winthrop Police Chief Terence M. Delehanty said in a statement that Feeley is on leaving, pending resolution of his case.

“James Feeley has been placed on administrative leave from the Winthrop Police Department pending the outcome of a criminal investigation headed by State Police Detectives assigned to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.”

No further details about the toddler’s death have been released as of Friday afternoon, Jan. 26.
